* Deskstar 7K2000... * Higher performance We are seeing some renewed interest in what is now being called "cloud storage": effectively, backing up your personal computers to a network in the cloud. This isn't a new idea. Products like Mozy and SugarSync have been out for some time, but more people now seem to be paying attention. The storage and security vendors all seem to want part of this market as well, not to mention OS vendors like Microsoft and Apple. We’ve written about hard drive performance several times: Understanding Hard Drive Performance Firmware is a special type of software that rarely, if ever, needs to be changed and so is stored on hardware devices such as read-only memory (ROM) where it is not readily changed (and is therefore "firm" rather than just "soft"). * Like many digital audio players, iPods can serve as external data storage devices when connected to a computer. o Directron The most recent version of iTunes has video organization features. * The interfaces that connect drives are evolving as well. For enterprise drives, Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) is moving to a new 6-Gbps standard this year. And for external drives, while I expect USB 2.0 to still be dominant along some eSata and FireWire drives. USB 3.0 seems poised to replace it, bringing with it much faster connections. However, I don't expect to see many drives supporting that for a while. It needs chipset support on the client PC, and that isn't yet formally in either AMD or Intel's roadmaps. Accelerate Your Hard Drive by Short Stroking: A performance analysis of short stroking, which reduces the head’s activity radius and capacity for the sake of improving I/O performance It is in embedded systems in automobiles, microwave ovens, electrocardiograph machines, compact disc players, and other devices. The iPod is currently the world's best-selling digital audio player, and its worldwide mainstream adoption makes it one of the most popular consumer brands.Users typically only hear about advances in the hard drive vendors see no slowdown. Most computer hardware is not seen by normal users. Devices in the iPod family are designed around a central scroll wheel (except for the iPod photo). The full-sized model stores media on a built-in hard drive, while the smaller iPod nano and iPod shuffle use flash memory. We compared the dated drive with the latest flagship model on our storage test system, but we also decided to copy the existing Windows XP installation onto the new drive. This provided direct performance comparison using SYSmark 2007. Finally, we installed Windows 7 and repeated the same tests.Although hard drives don't technically follow Moore's Law, they might as well. Every year it seems they get more capacity at lower cost Personal computers, the computer hardware familiar to most people, form only a small minority of computers (about 0.2% of all new computers produced in 2003) Market
